Fürst Solutions did installations in Senegal, Cameroon and Benin in the past few months. We had a quick chat with Marco Fuerstenberg to find out more about these installations.

What is it like working in Africa and doing these installations?

Even though travelling can get tiring, working with the local technicians from different countries keep it interesting. It is always beneficial to have these technicians available and on-site when doing the installations. This creates the perfect opportunity for them to learn while doing the work. On-the-job training is most beneficial when training new technicians. [1]

In Cameroon, there were two technicians that had to be trained. They helped with the installations and did their official training sessions directly afterwards. This proved to work extremely well as this helped the technicians to better understand the material being used as well as how the machines work as they did the training and installations almost simultaneously.

The Minister of Health came to visit to have a look at the work being done during our time there.

What are the types of solutions that Fürst Solutions create?

Fürst Solutions create localised solutions, especially with water. Due to water shortage at times, big reservoirs are needed to ensure there is enough water. Some places do have borehole water that can also be used. For water, the solutions are often customised.

Difficulties working in Africa

A big problem working in Africa is ensuring that all the materials are delivered before the installation starts. If any of the material is missing when the installations start, it becomes a problem as it is difficult to quickly get the different parts needed.

Planning of the installation is therefore of utmost importance. One of the most important recommendations from Fürst Solutions is to make sure a site inspection gets done before the installation even starts. With site inspections, it is easy to see what is missing. A material inspection is also crucial to ensure that all material is at the site ahead of the installation.

The electricity can also pose problems, due to the difference in 3-phase electricity between Europe and Africa. Therefore, it is important to get these units on European standard by working with local electricians/hospital electricians to ensure the electricity is done correctly and accordingly.

What happens in the months after an installation?

After installations, the focus turns to training the technicians and online support for the different technicians. Fürst Solutions usually tries to go back to the site after six months for an inspection. After 12 months we go back to do maintenance.

This means that even after an installation has been completed, Fürst Solutions remain in contact with the different countries to ensure that the installed units are running accordingly.
